It's here. Davido's sophomore album has arrived and there's a lot of high expectations for this project.
The singles leading up to this moment have been impressive. Being his third project and second album, growth is expected on this album.
Will we get that?
Let's find out in this 1 listen review of A Good Time by Davido
Intro
What is this heavenly sweet production? "Everything I do is a lifestyle" is the most Davido thing ever. I love this. The melody. Davido's sings and it's amazing. Intros are important guys. Attention span is low. Get people's attention from the jump. Davido understands this. The horns at the end and that vintage highlife-guitar vibe add extra flavour to this song. Intro of the year.
1 Milli
The song starts with so much promise. I hope it keeps this energy. 1 Milli feels like a second intro. “You know say na me be OBO, they call me Davido, Tell your mummy i go pay. How much is 1 million” is something Davido can actually say in real life. I love how Davido wears his ostentatious background on his sleeve and infuses it into his music. We are slowly being programmed for the rest of the album on this song or so I think. Two tracks in and the production is blowing me away. I could have sworn I heard Mayorkun and Yonda on the backup vocals. The song is more about Davido’s love for the baller lifestyle than the woman he’s actually singing to.
Check Am
I just heard a line about Yoruba men and not being a demon. A love song. Again, I still feel like we are still being prepared for what’s ahead. I’m tempted to say that Davido’s singing has improved. This is one of those songs that will be popular in certain circles. It might not be a big song but it could end up being a fan favorite.
Disturbance
Peruzzi is here. Speroach too. “Hennessy don dey sing oh”. Davido and Peruzzi have chemistry. We’ve always known and this song further proves it. I really hope they exploit it in the future. A joint EP or album. This is a pretty decent song.
If
The song that brought Davido back. I haven’t heard this song in a while and I’ve forgotten how good this production was. Shout out to Tekno. I want to skip but I also want to hear the album in its entirety. We dey here. When Davido screams “no do...no do”, that’s a moment.
D & G
London on da track. Kiddominant changed his tag? I prefer the old one. Dolce & Gabbana..got me going bananas. Davido just did that his screaming singing thing and I almost jumped. Lmaooo. Summer Walker killed her verse. I like how short it is. It’s a vibe song. Fit for kicking up your feet, smoking a blunt and nodding your head to. Again, Summer Walker did justice here.
Get To You
I’m intrigued by how this song starts. The beat starts coming together in pieces and blends with the Acappella perfectly. “I want you to be my tonight” indicates that it’s a love song. I like the progression. This is a wedding song. Yup. I can picture Davido and Chioma slow dancing on their wedding night to this. These love songs hit different when you remember that Davido is in a happy relationship. Again, this is a wedding anthem. I want a remix with Johnny Drille.
Risky
This song grew on me. I didn’t like it at first. I’m glad I’m at a point where I can properly appreciate it. Popcaan killed this song. They both blended well. Shout out to Speroach beatz for this production. It was sweet but am I the only one who has noticed that his beats tend to sound alike? Thankfully, this song is a bop so he gets a pass.
Sweet in the middle
Wurld opens this up like he’s opening the legs of woman and he’s about to perform some award winning cunnilingus. Zlatan is here as well. Davido’s verse is smooth. This is a song about sex that is packaged as a song about love. Packaged well. Oh wait. Naira Marley removes the packaging “I just want to chook you like needle”. I like Zlatan’s and Naira's delivery on this. This is the kind of record that should get heavy rotation on radio. Wurld brings back the seductive-Kamasutra vibes.
Fall
Davido’s most successful song till date. Yep, it’s this one. It’s a catchy song made up of lamba and sweet melodies. The bridge is the best part. Once that “If I offend you” side comes on, you will feel the urge to sing along. Smart move to put this song on the album. Kiddo… Kiddo… Kiddominat
Green Light Riddim
I love how this starts softly and morphs into a summer bop. This song is a winner. Davido and Shizzi. The dream team have done it again. Was that Teni or Ceeza Milli singing in the background? This is a single. A solid single. Where is the video? I want the video now. Again, who is singing in the background?
Big Picture
Was this collaboration strategic? I feel so. 3 rappers. I’m not sold on this song. It’s like they tried to fuse trap and Afrobeats. A boogie and Gunna deliver what we can expect from the modern day breed of “trap” rappers. Dremo had the best verse. He was the best person on this song. Song should have been at the end of the album. It’s weak and it shouldn’t be this long
One Thing
Feels like we’re back to the good music. Definitely back. “You are one thing that I’ve been wanting, I am a hunter, I have been hunting” Did Mayorkun write this? It just spunds like something the mayor will write and the fact that I think I just heard him as a backup vocalist on this, makes me think he is the culprit. The song is sweet. 3 minutes long. Shout out to Instablog and the “media”. There’s a “doh doh doh” melody that sounds exactly like the melody at the beginning of T Pain’s “I’m sprung” song. Fans will love this one.
Assurance
Yet another impressive single that Davido had released way before this album. Glad he put it on the tape. Davido has a fine collection of what I call “Rich people romance” songs. This is one of those songs and it may still grow into being a classic.
Blow my mind
Of course. Who can forget the sweet Davido and Chris Brown collab? If anything, this song prepared us for this album. It gave us a hint of the sweetness to come.
Company
Omo lope. Love how Davido harmonizes on the “...my money” line. The live band vibes on this are getting to me. Feels like a saturday night at a lounge with the love of your life type of vibe. Sweet tune.
Animashaun
Yonda is criminally slept on. Amazing songwriter and a finesser of hooks. Stop sleeping on Yonda. I don’t even understand Yoruba and I know that he killed that hook. The way Davido entered that second verse is fire. That Kpalakpala” flow is amazing. This is a single. It's a strong song.
Verdict: It's a triumphant return for Davido. This is a solid album. Production, lyrics and cohesion are way above average. 7/10.
